What is OpenAlias?

OpenAlias is an open protocol that replaces long, inconvenient Bitcoin addresses with simple, short, human-readable addresses.

For example, rather than saying, "Please pay me at 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa", you can now say "Please pay me at johnsmith.xbt.ie", which a Bitcoin wallet will automatically convert to the right address.

Although developed by the Monero development team, OpenAlias can be used with any cryptocurrency, and has already been implemented in a number of Bitcoin wallets, including Electrum.

How it works

OpenAlias addresses are fully qualified domain names, essentially web addresses. When you pay to an OpenAlias address, your wallet quickly checks the web address, where it finds the protocol-level Bitcoin adderss for the person you want to pay.

What we do

xbt.ie makes OpenAlias easily available to everyone by removing the difficulty of setting up a domain name. Simply register with your email address, and in 30 seconds you can set up an alias at <yourname>.xbt.ie with your own Bitcoin address.

Yeah, we should probably add some of that at some point. We're planning to implement https://letsencrypt.org/ once its generally available.
